The Perfectionism Paradox: Why Trying to Be Perfect Can Hold You Back

We strive for perfection in everything we do, whether it’s our careers, our relationships, or our hobbies. We want to be the best, and we want to be perfect. However, this quest for perfection can hold us back from pursuing projects and interests. This blog post will explore why perfectionism is a problem and how we can overcome it.

The Problem With Perfectionism

Perfectionism is the belief that we will be happier and more successful if we strive for perfection in everything we do. But unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Instead, perfectionism can prevent us from pursuing our goals and living happy and fulfilling lives.

There are a few reasons why perfectionism is a problem:

  1. It sets us up for failure. If we believe that we have to be perfect to be successful, then we’re bound to feel like failures when we make mistakes.

  2. Perfectionism is restrictive. It doesn’t allow for trial and error or experimentation. We become afraid to try new things because we’re afraid of making mistakes.

  3. Perfectionism is exhausting.

Constantly striving for unattainable standards is draining both mentally and physically.

So how can we overcome perfectionism? Here are a few suggestions:

learn to accept mistakes;

permit yourself to experiment;

focus on the process, not the outcome;

take breaks; and

be gentle with yourself.

If perfectionism plagues you, don’t worry-you’re not alone. I still battle with overcoming perfectionism every day. Fortunately, there are ways to overcome it. By learning to accept mistakes, permitting yourself to experiment, focusing on the process instead of the outcome, taking breaks, and being gentle with yourself, you can begin to let go of your need for perfection and live a happier and more fulfilled life.
